The session was a panel discussion on the significance of Earth–space transportation and return-to-Earth capabilities. As a practitioner of space-focused deep tech centered on space-utilization research, Suzuki joined the discussion on the value that return-to-Earth capabilities bring to space-utilization research.

Discussion at the Session

Against the backdrop of an expanding low-Earth-orbit (LEO) economy, the panel examined when and how re-entry and return-to-Earth services—bringing objects back from space to the ground—will open up a full-fledged market. While the reusability of rockets has dramatically lowered the cost of “getting to space,” services for “bringing things back from space to the ground” remain scarce. The panel shared the view that the ability to reliably return the results and samples of in-orbit experimentation and manufacturing to Earth will shape the next stage of growth for the LEO economy.

The panel brought together a developer of return vehicles (capsules), an operator of recovery platforms, space investment and advisory, space business development, and a practitioner of space-utilization research. From the differing standpoints of transportation, recovery, utilization, and investment, the participants discussed from multiple angles the conditions needed to commercialize return-to-Earth services.

The panel exchanged views from the perspectives of The Exploration Company (Europe), which provides space transportation and recovery using reusable return capsules; ElevationSpace (a startup originating from Tohoku University), which develops the compact space-utilization platform “ELS-R” built around atmospheric re-entry and recovery technology; Brindabella & Company (Australia), which addresses capital and market formation from an investment and advisory position specialized in the space and defense sectors; and Space BD, which handles business development and integration for space utilization. To these players on the “transport and bring-back” side, Suzuki offered the demand-side perspective of space-utilization research—“what will we measure, and what will we create, once samples are brought back?”—articulating the value of returning to Earth from the standpoint of utilization research.

Kengo Suzuki’s Key Remarks

Speaking as someone who conducts R&D and drives business on the front lines of space-utilization research, Suzuki centered his comments on the following three points.

1. Utilization research in LEO is the foundation for expanding humankind’s sphere of activity into space.

Utilization research in low Earth orbit (LEO) is an indispensable foundation for humankind to eventually expand its sphere of activity to more distant reaches of space. LEO is the frontier where the behavior of life and matter in the space environment can be systematically verified, and the accumulation of knowledge gained here is precisely what will support space utilization and space habitation beyond it.

2. The importance of high-precision ground-based measurement through sample return (return to Earth).

In the space environment, biological changes can occur—such as epigenetic changes to the genome—that are difficult to capture through in-orbit measurement alone. To capture these subtle, multifaceted changes without omission, it is decisively important not to rely solely on the limited measurement conditions in orbit, but to reliably return samples to Earth and measure them fully in high-precision ground-based analytical environments. Suzuki emphasized the significant role that re-entry and return-to-Earth (sample return) capabilities play as the precondition for enabling this high-precision ground-based measurement.

3. Automating research with LLMs makes research in LEO more meaningful.

Research automation using large language models (LLMs) makes research in LEO—where human labor and crew time are limited—more meaningful. Suzuki reported that the Company is advancing, as one of its core technologies, the R&D of “SpaceAgent,” an autonomous experimentation platform that seamlessly connects observation, judgment, and operation. Within the “round trip between space and Earth”—running experiments autonomously in orbit and bringing their results and samples back to Earth—SpaceAgent takes on the autonomy of in-orbit research and stands in a relationship of mutually reinforcing value with return-to-Earth capabilities.

The Company’s Initiatives — The Autonomous Experimentation Platform “SpaceAgent”

One theme of space-utilization research related to the Company’s core business is “SpaceAgent,” an autonomous experimentation platform that leverages LLMs. SpaceAgent connects the sequence of “observe, judge, and operate” in experimentation and advances experiments without presupposing constant human intervention—aiming, in effect, to create an “AI researcher that runs experiments in space.”

In June 2026, the Company announced that it had jointly filed two patents related to the infrastructure supporting autonomous experimentation in the space environment, together with Regenesome Inc., IDDK Co., Ltd., and Spacenome Lab., Inc. The return-to-Earth theme of this session connects naturally with this “space ↔ Earth” cycle, and SpaceAgent is positioned as an element responsible for the autonomy of in-orbit research.

“I believe re-entry and return to Earth are not merely a means of ‘bringing things back,’ but research infrastructure for fully verifying, on the ground, the changes that occur in space. In the space environment, phenomena such as epigenetic changes to the genome can occur that cannot be fully measured in orbit alone. Future Outlook

The Company intends to grow its space-utilization research platform, including the autonomous experimentation platform “SpaceAgent,” into a research foundation that enables the autonomy of in-orbit research. In parallel, the Company will explore the global deployment of such platforms going forward. Through international forums for discussion such as this session, the Company will continue its efforts to connect space-utilization research with society.
