Dr. Kengo Planetary Health Project

Microalgae for the health of the planet and of people — Dr. Kengo now in rollout in Malaysia.

Overview

Planetary Health with Dr. Kengo is an initiative that uses microalgae as a resource connecting the health of the planet and of people. “Dr. Kengo,” a functional nutrition brand co-founded by Kengo Suzuki — CEO of Space Seed Holdings — offers a balanced nutritional food made with microalgae (euglena) cultivated on Ishigaki Island, Japan, and is rolling it out in Malaysia. Suzuki advocates “planetary health” — the view that true global health spans not only individuals but also society, animals and the natural environment — and Space Seed Holdings introduces this brand as part of its planetary-health work.

Direction

  • Balanced nutrition from microalgae: Microalgae (euglena) grown on Ishigaki Island contain a wide range of nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, amino acids and unsaturated fatty acids. We examine their possible mechanism-based contribution to health, weighing the strength of the evidence.
  • A Malaysia-rooted rollout: Combining Japanese innovation with Halal-certified manufacturing in Malaysia, we are building a delivery base across ASEAN together with local partners, with future expansion from ASEAN to the wider world as the aim.
  • Science communication on planetary health: We share knowledge on large-scale microalgae cultivation and nutrition through accessible communication.

The scientific grounding

Microalgae are single-celled organisms that store nutrients through photosynthesis, and their ability to generate nutrient-rich biomass on limited land and water is the backdrop to their appeal as a sustainable nutrition source. The euglena used by this brand is known as a rare microalga that combines properties of both plants and animals, and it sits within the lineage of euglena Co., Ltd., the first in the world to succeed at outdoor mass cultivation of edible euglena.

  • The mechanisms behind the nutritional profile (mechanism-based potential): The vitamins, minerals, amino acids and unsaturated fatty acids in microalgae are all nutrients involved in human metabolism. Carotenoids, for instance, are studied as components involved in antioxidant activity — but “containing a component” is not the same as “improving a clinical health outcome.” This project keeps to presenting the nutritional profile, avoids asserting efficacy, and takes the stance of examining mechanism-based potential alongside the strength of the evidence.
  • Mass cultivation as a technical foundation: Supplying microalgae at a stable quality requires controlling cultivation conditions (light, temperature, nutrients, agitation) outdoors and indoors, and managing each step of harvesting, drying and processing. Mass cultivation of edible microalgae presumes an accumulation of cultivation and manufacturing technology that reconciles quality with safety (heavy-metal and microbial control, among others).
  • Halal-certified manufacturing in Malaysia: With ASEAN and Muslim markets in view, each step of raw materials, manufacturing and distribution is aligned to Halal certification requirements. Combining Japan-derived materials and technology with locally certified manufacturing is a prerequisite for global rollout.

The planetary-health framework

The “planetary health” advocated by Kengo Suzuki is an interdisciplinary view that treats true global health as spanning not only individual well-being but also the health of society, animals and the natural environment. By positioning microalgae as “a resource connecting the health of the planet and of people,” it offers a framework for discussing nutrition, environment and society as one continuous whole. This concept is advocated by Suzuki as an individual; Space Seed Holdings introduces this brand as part of its own planetary-health work.

Recent focus

In April 2025, a soft launch toward the global market was held in Kuala Lumpur, moving from local test sales toward a full rollout. The rollout is driven by the Malaysian company JAT LIFE SDN BHD for manufacturing and operations, with marketing led by Sirehemas (Sireh Emas Marketing). At the launch, Kengo Suzuki gave a keynote setting out the planetary-health concept, with a stated target of 100,000 boxes sold per year. Health-related information is communicated on a mechanism basis and as objectively as possible.
